the boyfriend curse

I knit you a sweater // eight weeks // hours at a stretch // knitting carefully//
(no split infinitives) // purling // perfecting intarsia // picture knitting // (an
enviable skill, it takes patience of the hand & eye, moving together in
synchronicity) // knitters say // “don’t make a sweater for your boyfriend, save
your stitches for your fathers & brothers” // (maybe a husband you’ve already
looped around your needles & locked into place) // knitting your beau a sweater
is cursed // like tattooing your lover’s name // on your body. // to test the curse
is to doom the relationship. // I paid no heed to the warning // (though it was
printed plainly in black & white at the top of the pattern, & again, below the
knitting chart) // all that work, wasted // the fruit of my insomnia & luckless
heart // strands of my hair // looped & locked // noose-like // through a webbed
fabric of knits & purls // the one stitch I dropped // should have been // my
warning // I patched it up & gave it to you // binding us off. // next time, // I will
know I am not exempt from curses // & I will save my stitches // for my father //
who has never once // left me // unraveled & frayed // on the floor
